AstraZeneca Pharma India, a key player in the pharmaceutical industry, has declared its plan to sell its manufacturing facility located in Bengaluru. This decision emerges from a comprehensive strategic review of the company’s global manufacturing and supply chain operations. Despite the upcoming sale, AstraZeneca reaffirms its strong commitment to the Indian market, emphasizing its dedication to enhancing access to innovative medical treatments in the country.
The move to sell the Bengaluru site is a calculated step in AstraZeneca’s broader strategy to strengthen its position as a pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically in the areas of specialized diseases and patient care transformation. This decision, the company assures, does not imply a reduction in its involvement or investment in India. On the contrary, AstraZeneca emphasizes its ongoing commitment to lead in scientific innovation and cater to specialist disease areas in the country. The company is acutely aware of the implications of this decision and is dedicated to prioritizing the needs and well-being of its employees and patients, guaranteeing an uninterrupted supply of medicines.
This strategic decision was formally announced in a filing to the exchange on November 16. As part of the preparation for sale, AstraZeneca aims to position the Bengaluru facility as a fully operational unit. The company is actively seeking a buyer who can continue to function as a Contract Manufacturing Organisation (CMO) for the products currently manufactured or packaged at the site. This process will be conducted in strict compliance with all necessary statutory approvals.
Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Bengaluru, AstraZeneca Pharma India is an independent subsidiary of the UK-based AstraZeneca Plc. The Indian arm, which operates autonomously, employs over 1,400 individuals. The company has been consistently focusing on the discovery, development, and commercialization of prescription medicines. Its primary therapeutic areas include oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolism, and respiratory diseases, marking significant strides in the pharmaceutical sector both in India and globally.
