Yesterday as we walked along the beach in 20 degrees sunshine we were sure we had made the right decision. It is now the end of January and we have been here three months. Yes the temperature is a little cooler now than it was in November and the mornings are sometimes cloudy. However there are few wet or cold days and the sun sets are beautiful. We haven't even put a fire on yet.
Why did we make the decision to winter in the sun? You guessed it, we were fed up with cold gray skies of winter, rain, snow, frost, icy roads and fog. We love England in the summer, the green and bright scenery and will be pleased to return again whilst the landscape here becomes parched again. We think we have the best of both! What do you think?
How did we manage to do it? Simple really, decisions and planning. A few years ago I made a decision to spend winters somewhere warm and started researching capabilities and where I would like it to be. My partner did take much persuading as with playing so much sport his joints were suffering, and the warmth would help.
At the same time I decided to start an online business which would give me an interest and extra cash for my retirement; so now both dreams have become a reality.
What are your dreams for your later years? Do you even think about it? Make your plans for the future NOW; make sure you have an interest or hobby that you can take forward into your retirement. Doing something you love isn't work at all, and a little hobby business, is flexible, can be worked part-time leaving plenty of time for other activities, and even grows whilst you sleep!
Don't be a golf widow / widower! My partner is a keen sportsman and plays tennis, squash, racket ball and over here something called paddle tennis, so he has plenty going on in his life, so my hobby business is a delight to me. I have learned to build websites, various online marketing strategies and love to see my business develop. Who would have believed it a few years ago I could hardly send emails. The satisfaction is immense.
